IDIA invites you to be part of our 6th Festival year with a fabulous lineup on August 18th & 19th. You will be supporting our budding artists, watch Bay Area based performing artists, and witness world-renowned Bharatanatyam artists in what promises to be a most enjoyable event for dance enthusiasts and art lovers.

This year, we are embracing a HYBRID format by bringing a few events right into your homes in collaboration with tikkl as well as a day long festival in-person at Cubberly Theatre in Palo Alto, CA. We hope you will join us for all these exciting performances.

Event 1: Junior Showcase (Virtual)

IDIA prides itself in being a community-building event – this year we are proud to showcase five young adults from the Bay Area. We present Swara Krishnan, Pavithra Nagarajan, Nisha Naveen, Janhavi Pillai, Sowmya Sridharan– dedicated dancers, continuing to advance their learning and committed to keeping the art form as part of their lives. IDIA applauds and supports this young generation of Bay Area Dancers.

IDIA would like to be a platform to motivate and be a festival to inspire & encourage students of dance. We are happy to share a performance of one Junior artist who has shown growth, rigor, and advancement in Bharatanatyam. This year we are looking forward to a performance by Madhavi Mani.

Navigating the Journey – Panel Discussion led by Navya Maitri Konda

The panel discussion will delve into the challenges, growth and next steps in the journey beyond a debut performance of a student of dance from the United States. Personal narratives from a group of young aspiring performers as well as an engaging and interactive discussion will surely throw some thoughtful insights to students of Indian Classical Performing Arts.

Margam Performance – Vaibhav Arekar

Vaibhav Arekar is one of the leading Bharatanatyam artist of India. An intense, calm, and immersive approach is a key signature style of his performance. Vaibhav’s choreography is inspired by modernity within the classical template. His work – such as ‘Trayyanta’,  ‘ Four Seasons’, ‘Shrimanth Yogi’, ‘Venugaan’ – investigates, involves, and interrogates various themes in Bharatanatyam.

Sankhya Dance Company, founded by Vaibhav Arekar- its artistic director is recognized for its intense yet entertaining work. Apart from an extensive Indian tour, Vaibhav, a soloist with his dance company, has been invited to perform in Japan, Brazil, Canada, the USA, Poland, Russia, Germany, France, and Australia.

Margam Performance – Renjith & Vijna

One of the most sought after young Bharatanatyam duo, trained under eminent Gurus in Kalakshetra style; Renjith Renjith and Vijna, have been performing, choreographing and teaching for the past two decades. Their mission as practitioners of Bharatanatyam is to extend the boundaries of Indian traditional dance and create a new benchmark in the aesthetics of presentation by using innovative dance techniques. They strive to inculcate a higher quality in their performances that inspires, entertains and educates a diverse audience. They have travelled extensively and have performed in India, Europe, USA, Canada, Middle East and South-East Asia. Some of their notable performances have been at Madras Music Academy’s Annual Dance Festival, The Darbar Dance Festival in London, Soorya Dance Festival, Kerala Sangeeta NatakaAkademi, Nishagandhi Festival.

Their collaborative works include ‘TARU’ of Korzo Theatre, in The Hague which was co-supported by Jiri Kylian Foundation and ‘HISTOIRES VRAIES’, choreographed by French Contemporary Dancer, Cécile Loyer, for the Tamil Nadu Government and Theatre D’Orleans. The duo have been recognised with the ‘NatyaRatna’ from Trinity Arts Festival, Chennai, in 2017 and the prestigious ‘Ustad Bismillah Khan YuvaPuraskar’ for 2018 by The Sangeet NatakAkademi, New Delhi, for Bharatanatyam. Known for their nuanced dancing, inspiring workshops and collaborations with leading dancers, choreographers and musicians, the couple works together as creative partners in moulding complete individuals through their brainchild: Sāraswatham Foundation. They are undoubtedly a perfect couple in the younger generation of prominent ‘Dance Duos’ in India, representing the élan that signifies the principle of Shakti and Shiva in spiritual parlance.
